ANSI APPROVED APCO AND NENA STANDARD PSAP-SERVICE CAPABILITY CRITERIA RATING SCALE
November 17, 2008, Washington, DC - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) announced today that the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) approved the APCO and NENA standard to assist Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) managers and their governing authorities to identify their current level of service capability.
“As the first source for citizens seeking information and assistance during disasters, our communications centers must always be prepared for the worst,” APCO International President Chris Fischer said. “APCO International is pleased to have partnered with NENA on this great resource to help them ensure that they are.”
APCO/NENA ANS 1.102.1-200x: Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)-Service Capability Criteria Rating Scale was approved by ANSI on November 3. The standard includes an assessment tool to objectively evaluate PSAP capabilities against models representing the best level of preparedness, survivability, and sustainability amidst a wide range of natural and manmade events. In addition, the standard can assist PSAPs in discussing their readiness to survive these events with those responsible for funding them. The content was developed by the APCO-NENA PSAP Survivability Working Group.
”It is imperative that PSAPs from coast to coast are ready to respond to crisis situations of all kinds,” said NENA President Ron Bonneau, ENP. “By partnering with APCO to create this ANSI approved standard, we have given our 9-1-1 centers a valuable tool to evaluate their readiness and ensure that no call for help goes unanswered.”
