APCO APPLAUDS INTRODUCTION OF BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO ALLOCATE THE D BLOCK TO PUBLIC SAFETY

April 21, 2010, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today applauded Reps. Peter King (3rd Dist., NY), Anh Cao (2nd Dist., LA), Yvette Clarke (11th Dist., NY), Candice Miller (10th Dist., MI) and Mike Rogers (3rd Dist., AL) for their introduction of bipartisan legislation to allocate the D Block spectrum to public safety for the development of a national interoperable public safety broadband network.

"APCO International applauds Reps. King, Cao, Clarke, Miller and Rogers for introducing this vital bipartisan legislation to allocate the D Block 700 MHz spectrum to public safety, ultimately improving the public’s immediate and short- and long-term security for everyday public safety, during critical events and in the midst of any future national terror attacks or large-scale natural disasters," APCO International President Richard Mirgon said. "We look forward to our continued work with our public safety partners and state and local government organizations to ensure Congress and the Administration speak out in support of public safety, homeland security and our nation’s cities, counties and states by supporting D block allocation to public safety."

The bipartisan "Broadband for First Responders Act of 2010 (H.R. 5081)" was introduced to the House of Representatives last night, just one day after the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombings and just five months before the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, both of which highlighted the vital need for improved interoperable communications for large-scale incidents, as well as day-to-day public safety response.
