APCO AND IJIS INSTITUTE PRESENT DATA INTEROPERABILITY PAPERS

August 18, 2009, Las Vegas, Nev. -The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and the IJIS Institute's Public Safety Data Interoperability (PSDI) Program are releasing the Guide to Information Sharing and Data Interoperability for Local Communication Centers and the Priority Data Exchanges for Local Communication during a session at APCO Internationals 75th Annual Conference and Exposition today.

Both documents are part of a set of deliverables being produced by the APCO/IJIS PSDI Project. The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance, is focused on advancing open, standards-based information sharing to support the emergency communications domains, including law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services (EMS), and related homeland security domains. The results of this project will set the foundation for future projects to create high-value, first responder National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) exchanges.

"The APCO/IJIS Public Safety Data Interoperability Project - What it Means to the Members of APCO as Well as Public Safety Organizations" will explain the process followed by the project team to understand the various interoperability projects that have been undertaken within the PSDI project and what the future holds for data interoperability. It will take place at APCO International's 75th Annual Conference and Exposition today at 3:00p.m. in the Las Vegas Hilton Pavilion 4.

"The goal of this initial project is to improve real-time information sharing capabilities in the emergency response environment," APCO International President Chris Fischer said. "Primarily, the program aims to define a strategy for the adoption and use of NIEM as the standard for sharing critical information between emergency communications centers and public safety agencies, within and across jurisdictions, and with other relevant emergency management and intelligence domains of the federal government."
