Position


Under direct supervision of a Police Sergeant or Watch Commander, receives and transmits routine and  emergency telephone and voice radio messages, dispatches equipment and personnel; receives and transmits teletypes for related computer systems. Provides clerical/secretarial support for the Police Chief and the Police Department on a shift basis. This position may work nights, weekends, and holidays.

The Police Department

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.  

  • Communicates with police units in the field by radio; answers telephones on the Emergency 911 line; places service calls and dispatches police, medical, fire and search and rescue accordingly;
  • Maintains a daily log of police activity;
  • Completes and maintains a variety of police records;
  • Monitors radio and teletype system communications of local, state, and federal agencies;
  • Processes inquiries from officers in the field through the Justice Data Interface Controller (JDIC) computer;
  • Gives first aid in medical emergencies;
  • Inputs data into the computer about stolen or damaged property, stolen vehicles, and registered guns;
  • Assists public at the counter, giving and receiving information and directing to proper offices; makes copies of reports for citizens, insurance companies, attorneys, etc.; receives and processes overnight parking permits; types clearance letters for citizens;
  • Logs and serves subpoenas for in-house officers;
  • Assists the public at the reception desk;
  • Receives complaints and reports, and provides the public with information and directions;
  • May work nights, weekends, and holidays;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

 

High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be currently employed or have been employed within the past 12 months with a current public safety agency (police or fire) with the responsibility for taking, dispatching, and handling 911 calls and two-way radio traffic. 

 

Must have successfully completed the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Public Safety Dispatchers Basic Course.

 

Must be able to work a minimum of one 12 hr shift per month may be days, nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the department’s needs.

The Town of Hilton Head Island is seeking a motivated individual to join their outstanding Dispatch organization.

 

Located 45 minutes from Savannah, GA, Hilton Head Island is one of the world’s premier resort locations offering a rich and rewarding lifestyle.  Recreational, cultural and outdoor amenities are in abundance and coupled with its rich history make it an ideal place to live and work.  We are currently filling an opening in our Dispatch organization.

 

The primary responsibility of this position is to relay information from public emergency callers to proper resources that can provide assistance when necessary.  The center answers enhanced 911 and conventional lines and is responsible for monitoring and dispatching for the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division and other local agencies; dispatching appropriate personnel if necessary; and troubleshooting communications equipment as appropriate.  The position reports to a Shift Supervisor.

 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Receives calls from public for emergency services;
  • Determines which response agency should be responsible for responding to the call for assistance and dispatches appropriate units;
  • Relays all appropriate and necessary information to the responding emergency units;
  • Provides emergency assistance to callers until responding emergency units arrive and assume control of the situation;
  • Monitors primary and secondary radio channels;
  • Conserves the knowledge of location and availability of all field units,
  • Maintains, updates, and applies accurate records by utilizing related information databases and logs information into the Town’s reporting system;
  • Records hydrants that are out of service and streets with any obstructions and relays information to appropriate parties and agencies; logs reports of traffic light malfunctions or maintenance needs and forwards information to appropriate parties and agencies; updates the Town’s burn line every morning to inform residents of burning conditions; ensures that complexes on fire watch contact the dispatch every hour; updates gate codes, deputy call signs and employee telephone numbers for daily use; monitors the weather channel for any warnings of pending severe weather;

 

In addition to being able to multi-task, the ideal candidate will be a team player, possess strong keyboarding skills, be able to follow procedures and have the equivalent education + experience or a high school diploma or G.E.D. + 1 year of experience in administrative support, customer service, emergency dispatch, or a closely related field.  In addition, if hired, they must obtain: 

  • Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification (E-911 Specialist) within one (1) year of employment;
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR Certification within three (3) months of employment;
  • Telecommunications Specialist (E-9-1-1) Certification within one year of employment.
  • Training equivalent to Haz Mat Awareness in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120

Description: This position is located at the McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center (PSTOC)at 4890 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, Virginia, which is near West Ox Road (VA 608)/Lee Highway (VA 29)/Fairfax County Parkway (VA 7100) and I-66.

This announcement is to create an eligibility list, which is a pool of applicants who are eligible to fill these positions. There will be multiple positions filled from this announcement. This recruitment is for the training academy class that will begin on August 16, 2010.

This is a highly responsible and rewarding public safety position. Employees work an assigned 12.5-hour shift, either 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on scheduled days of the week. Employees are scheduled off every other weekend (Friday through Sunday), and work approximately 177 days per year. During the Academy training period, the individual will work an 8-hour day or evening shift depending on class assigned. During the Academy and on-the-job training period of approximately 20 weeks, employees are restricted from additional outside employment or taking other classes unless assigned by the agency.

Receives and processes 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls from the public using a specialized telephone system. Gathers, classifies and supplements pertinent information obtained from the caller and enters it into the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. Operates a CAD console equipped with multiple computer terminals, including mapping, aerial photography and a radio console with multiple radio channels to dispatch police and fire-rescue units. Monitors and controls a large number of public safety resources throughout Fairfax County. Queries and enters information (e.g., stolen articles, wanted persons, missing persons) from the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) data files.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education. United States citizenship is required.

Special Requirements: All applicants must satisfactorily pass the following requirements: computer-based simulation test, organizational compatibility test, panel interview, polygraph examination, and background investigation. Must be able to perform essential job functions, hearing and speaking clearly. Must have never committed, been involved in, or been convicted of a felony.

Preferred Qualifications: Associate's or bachelor's degree. Applicants should possess a strong work ethic and the ability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment. Requires excellent decision making, resource allocation, prioritizing and deployment skills.
